In the interest of agency, wearing homemade clothes is probably the only way to actively choose an aesthetic that is not dictated by commercial forces. In today’s post-industrial age, women are subjected to a barrage of messages about how we should look because we buy them, literally and figuratively. It may be harder to kick the figurative habit, but we can start with the literal.
Wearing homemade clothes also gives me a funny free feeling - because I can walk around telling myself, ‘ I’d be naked right now except for the work of my own two hands.’ It makes me feel like I’m wearing a costume, except it’s a costume that other people appear to read as a normal dress. It transforms me into a walking inside joke, and that makes me happier, too.
